TAWI members and volunteers gathered in Corpus Christi to conduct the Cabinetmaking Skills Contest for the Skills USA Texas State Leadership Conference. 2019 was the 21st consecutive year that TAWI has sponsored the cabinetmaking contest which now is the annual Spring Chapter meeting site. The event has become a popular volunteer event that receives enthusiastic support from TAWI manufacturing and supplier members each year.
TAWI members and guests attended the meeting held in the contest booth followed by dinner and judging of student projects well into the evening. Saturday morning chapter members volunteered as judges for other conference contests in addition to the Cabinetmaking contest. 12 Contestants from around the state competed for the opportunity to represent Texas at the Skills USA National contest in Louisville, Kentucky in June. Since 1999 TAWI has presented our 1st Place contestant with an award covering all expenses to attend the National Skills USA contest in the summer.
TAWI has awarded college scholarships to our top 3 contestants.
Kyle Hassett is the recipient of the 6th Annual Charles Lutz Memorial 1st Place, $1500 College Scholarship. Kyle has earned an unprecedented 3 State championships!
Jacob Davis 2nd Place received a $1000 College Scholarship
Cesar Zapata 3rd Place received a $500 Scholarship.
TAWI has awarded $34,500 in Scholarships since the inception of it’s scholarship fund for Texas Skills USA Cabinetmaking Contest.
